Hand Wraps: Protection for Hands and Wrists
Hand wraps are part of the essential kit, whether you're just starting out or have been training for years. They stabilise the wrist and knuckles, protect against injuries and at the same time extend the lifespan of your boxing gloves. At The Fight Company you'll find hand wraps in various lengths and styles, for boxing, Muay Thai and MMA.
Why are hand wraps important?
Boxing gloves alone are not enough. The small bones in the hand and the wrist need additional stabilisation, especially during sparring and intensive punch training. Hand wraps secure the joints, cushion the impact and noticeably reduce the risk of injury.
There's also a practical side effect: wraps absorb sweat before it soaks into the inner material of your gloves. Moisture is one of the main reasons why boxing gloves wear out quickly. Anyone who wears wraps protects both: their hands and their equipment.
What types of hand wraps are there?
There are different styles, depending on the training form and personal preference.
Elastic and non-elastic wraps
Non-elastic hand wraps don't give when wrapping and sit tight. Elastic and semi-elastic versions have some stretch and are more forgiving when putting them on. Which fits better is a question of feel; both reliably protect the wrist and knuckles and are equally suitable for boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai .
Hand wraps by length
The length of the hand wraps depends on your hand size and your training form. As a guide: 2.5 m for smaller hands and children, 3.5 m to 4.5 m for all-round use, 5 m for large hands and maximum stabilisation. For MMA training with compact gloves, shorter wraps are more practical; 5 m can hardly fit underneath.
Quick wraps and inner gloves
Quick wraps and inner gloves are quick to put on and mainly protect the glove from sweat. They offer little to no wrist stabilisation and are more suitable for experienced athletes with already strong wrists. For sparring we recommend classic hand wraps; the stabilisation makes the difference in dynamic situations.
Wrapping and caring for hand wraps properly
Wrapping hand wraps correctly is a technique you have to learn. Pay attention to even tension and avoid creases when wrapping; an incorrectly wrapped bandage gives less protection and can press. How to wrap hand wraps correctly step by step, we explain in our blog.
For care: wraps can be washed in the washing machine. Pay attention to colours, as they can bleed especially in the first washes. Leave to air out well after washing.
MMA wraps and Muay Thai wraps – what should you consider?
For MMA and Muay Thai the same basic rules apply as for boxing; protection and stabilisation are paramount. In MMA training you should pay attention to length: under compact MMA gloves there's less room; shorter wraps or quick wraps are more practical here. In Muay Thai and kickboxing you can work with full lengths; here protection during clinching and blocking is particularly important.
Boxing tape is also used professionally, usually in combination with gauze for individually adapted wrapping. In training, classic hand wraps are perfectly adequate for most athletes.

Frequently asked questions about hand wraps
Which hand wraps do I need?
That depends on your hand size and your training form. For beginners and general training, a semi-elastic wrap in 3.5 m to 4.5 m is sufficient. Those with small hands or training with MMA gloves should choose shorter versions. Children are well served with 2.5 m.What length should hand wraps be?
As a rule of thumb: 2.5 m for children and very small hands, 3.5 m to 4.5 m for most adults, 5 m for large hands and maximum stabilisation. In MMA training, go shorter; there's little space under compact gloves. How often do you need to replace hand wraps?
That depends on training intensity and care. If you train regularly and wash the wraps after every session, you can use them for many months. When the Velcro no longer holds, the material stretches out or the wrap no longer winds evenly, it's time for new ones. Can you wash boxing hand wraps?
Yes, boxing hand wraps can be washed in the washing machine. Pay attention to colours, especially new wraps may bleed. After washing, allow to dry thoroughly, do not tumble dry. What is the difference between boxing hand wraps and inner gloves?
Boxing hand wraps are individually wrapped around your hand and wrist, providing real stabilisation and protection. Inner gloves are simply pulled on like a glove. They mainly protect the glove from sweat, but offer hardly any stabilisation. For beginners and for sparring, classic wraps are the better choice.Buy boxing hand wraps at The Fight Company
