Groin Guard: Essential Equipment in Combat Sports

No sparring without a groin guard. Whether boxing, MMA, Muay Thai or kickboxing, a good groin protector is part of the basic equipment, regardless of what level you train at. In competition it's mandatory, in training simply indispensable. At The Fight Company you'll find groin guards from Caged, Venum, Booster, Super Pro, Shock Doctor, Twins and Cleto Reyes, for every application and every body size.

Why is a groin guard so important?

A hit to the groin without protection can interrupt training for weeks. A groin guard in combat sports is therefore not an optional addition, but basic protection, just like mouthguard and gloves. It protects not only the sensitive area, but also the sides and, depending on the model, the kidney area. Anyone who trains without one risks unnecessary injuries that can easily be avoided.

What types of groin guard are there?

Groin guards come in various designs; depending on the combat sport and personal preference, there are different models.

Boxing Groin Guard

Groin guards for boxing are usually somewhat wider and more robustly built. They protect the groin, the sides and often the kidney area too. The hard plastic cup with rubber edge sits comfortably against the body and prevents pressure points from direct hits.

Kickboxing Groin Guard

Groin guards for kickboxing follow similar requirements to boxing, with the difference that low kicks and knee strikes also need to be cushioned. A good fit and sufficient freedom of movement for high kicks are particularly important here.

Professional Boxing Groin Guard

For competition and intensive sparring at a high level, there are specially reinforced models with higher protective effect. Professional groin guards for boxing offer more stability, better fixation and often meet the requirements of competition regulations.

Steel Groin Guard

Steel groin guards offer maximum protection from direct hits, especially in Muay Thai and kickboxing, where knee strikes and low kicks are standard. More robust than plastic models, but somewhat heavier. For athletes who rely on absolute protection, the first choice.

How do you wear a groin guard correctly?

Most groin protectors are worn directly over underwear or briefs. Sturdy elastic bands or a jockstrap keep the protector in place. It's important that it fits firmly and doesn't shift during movement; a slipped groin guard no longer protects reliably. Some models are inserted directly into the shorts, which is particularly practical in MMAtraining.

Finding the right size

Groin guard sizes vary depending on the manufacturer. Most brands are based on waist circumference or clothing sizes such as S, M, L and XL. As a starting point: slightly tighter is better than too loose; an oversized groin guard slips and offers less protection. Always check the size chart of the respective manufacturer, as a Caged M can differ from a Venum M. If in doubt, our team is happy to help.

Frequently asked questions about groin guards

What does a groin guard do?

A groin guard protects the sensitive groin area from direct hits. Kicks, knees and unintentional punches can otherwise lead to painful injuries that interrupt training for weeks. In competition it's mandatory in all combat sports. In training it protects you and gives you the confidence to concentrate fully on sparring.

What size groin guard?

Most manufacturers are based on waist circumference. Always check the size chart of the respective manufacturer; an M from Caged can differ from an M at Venum or Shock Doctor. As a rule of thumb: go one size smaller rather than too large, so that the protector fits and doesn't slip.

How do you wear a groin guard correctly?

A groin guard is worn directly over your underwear, secured either with elastic straps or a jockstrap. It should fit snugly without pinching or restricting freedom of movement. With MMA models, the groin guard is often inserted directly into the shorts. Important: check it's in place before sparring – a shifted guard is useless.
