In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the belt is more than an accessory. It represents your progress, your experience and the time you've invested on the mat. At The Fight Company you'll find BJJ belts for all grades, from white belt to black belt, for children and adults, for training and competition.
BJJ Grades at a Glance
In BJJ you progress through five main grades as an adult, each with its own stripes as intermediate levels. The system is clear and respected; whoever wears a belt has earned it.
White Belt
The entry point into BJJ. Here you learn the fundamentals: positions, escapes and first submissions. The white belt is the longest phase for most practitioners.
Blue Belt
First technical maturity. You have a solid foundation and can apply techniques situationally. The blue belt is often the first major milestone.
Purple Belt
Advanced level. Your game becomes more individual, tactical and deeper. The purple belt marks the transition from learner to serious practitioner.
Brown Belt
High expertise. You're preparing for the black belt, technically, mentally and in the depth of your understanding of the sport.
Black Belt
The master grade. Years of experience, continuous training and a deep connection to the sport. In BJJ, the black belt is one of the hardest-earned grades in martial arts.
What should you look for in a BJJ belt?
A BJJ belt has to withstand a lot: daily training, regular washing and the pressure of knots and grips. Here's what matters:
Material and Construction
High-quality BJJ belts are made from durable cotton with reinforced seams. The material should be sturdy without becoming too stiff; a belt that won't tie properly is disruptive during training. Good construction is evident in clean stitching, colour-fast materials and consistency that remains even after many washes.
Length and Fit
A BJJ belt should wrap twice around the waist and sit securely with a stable knot, without being too short or so long that the ends interfere during rolling. The right length depends on your height and your gi. Check the size chart of the respective manufacturer, as specifications can vary by brand.
Caring for BJJ Belts
A BJJ belt absorbs sweat during training and should be washed regularly. Wash at 30°C, no aggressive detergents and no tumble dryer – air drying preserves the shape and colour longest. If you care for your belt regularly, you'll enjoy it for a long time.
Frequently Asked Questions about BJJ Belts
What does the BJJ belt mean?
The BJJ belt symbolises your rank and your progress in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Each colour represents a specific level of technical ability and experience. Stripes on the belt mark progress within a grade. In BJJ, the belt is not awarded lightly; each colour represents real time on the mat.
How long does it take to achieve the different belts?
That's very individual and depends on training frequency, natural aptitude and the gym. As a rough guide: blue belt after one to two years, purple belt after a further two to three years, brown belt after a further two years, black belt after a total of eight to fifteen years of intensive training. BJJ is one of the slowest grading systems in martial arts, and with good reason.
What size BJJ belt do I need?
The size depends on your height and weight. Most manufacturers provide size charts with height and waist measurements as guidelines. The belt should wrap twice around the waist and sit securely with a flat knot. Always check the chart of the respective manufacturer.
Can I wash a BJJ belt in the washing machine?
Yes, at 30°C and without aggressive detergents or bleach. No tumble dryer, as the material can shrink and the colour can suffer. After washing, leave to air dry.
